Why Representation Matters

Research has identified the lack of female representation as a root cause of gender inequity in the arts. When girls do not see themselves portrayed in careers through digital media, books, classes, and educational resources, they are less likely to view those pursuits as realistic options. Consequently, girls become less likely to join male-dominated fields, such as the creative arts, when their contributions are not recognized.
Due to a significant lack of representation, we continue to face an uphill climb to achieve gender equity in the arts. For example, the artworks of women are still significantly underrepresented in our society. Art history classes, museums, galleries, and auction houses all feature art predominantly created by men.
We can work cooperatively to shine a spotlight on the contributions of women in the arts. At Art and Soul, our goal is to increase representation and close the gender gap in the arts.
